Tips For Your First Day of Dance Class: What Every New Dancer Should Know!

If you’re reading this, it probably means you’re about to start your very first dance class at Nan’s School of Dance, how exciting! Whether you’re about to twirl into ballet, tap your way through rhythm, or leap across the room in jazz class, your dance journey is just beginning. Starting something new can feel a little scary, but don’t worry we’re here to help you feel confident, prepared, and most importantly, excited for your first day.

Let’s break down what to expect and how to get ready so you can walk into your first dance class like a star.

What to Wear (and What Not to Worry About)

Your outfit isn’t just about looking cute, it’s about being comfortable and ready to move! Check with Nan’s School of Dance to find out what’s recommended for your specific style of dance. But here are some general tips:

  • Ballet: A leotard, tights, and ballet shoes. Hair should be up and away from your face (a bun is best!).
  • Jazz or Tap: Leotard or form-fitting top, leggings or dance shorts, and proper dance shoes.
  • Hip-Hop: A t-shirt or tank top, joggers or leggings, and clean sneakers used just for dance.

Pack Your Dance Bag Like a Pro

Your dance bag is your trusty sidekick. Here’s what to toss inside before heading to the studio:

  • Your dance shoes (ballet, tap, jazz, whatever you need!)
  • A water bottle
  • Hair ties and a brush
  • A small healthy snack (especially if you’re dancing after school)
  • Deodorant or body wipes for older dancers
  • A smile and positive attitude (yes, this counts!)

Try not to overpack, you want to be ready, not weighed down.

Arrive On-Time or Early

It’s totally normal to feel butterflies and first day jitters, but just remember, everyone there was new once. The instructors at Nan’s are super friendly and love seeing new faces walk through the door!

We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes before your class starts. This gives you time to:

  • Use the restroom
  • Change into your dance shoes
  • Warm up a bit if needed
  • Say hi to your instructor and classmates

Meet Your Instructor and Classmates

Your dance teacher is there to help you grow, have fun, and build confidence. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re unsure about a move or routine.

You might also meet other new dancers who feel just like you, shy, excited, or even a little nervous. Be kind and introduce yourself! Having a dance buddy can make everything more fun.

Focus on Fun, Not Perfection

Your first class is all about trying something new. Don’t worry if you don’t get every step right the first time, that’s totally normal! Every dancer starts as a beginner, and the best way to improve is to keep coming, keep practicing, and keep smiling.

Here’s what to remember:

  • Listen and watch closely
  • Try your best
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
  • Celebrate small wins (like nailing a turn or keeping good posture!)

Your dance teacher will guide you step by step. Trust the process, you’ve got this!

Parents: How You Can Help

Parents, we understand you’re just as excited and sometimes nervous as your children for their first day of dance class. To support your dancer, double-check the dress code and pack their dance bag the night before. Offer encouraging words and remind them it’s okay to be nervous. Getting them to class on time will help them feel relaxed. Let them know it’s okay not to be perfect as they are learning, and celebrate their bravery after class with a high five or a treat.

Reflect and Recharge

When class is over, take a moment to check in with how you feel. Tired? That’s normal. Happy? We hope so! Nervous about coming back? That’s okay too. Each week gets easier and more fun as you start to remember the steps, build strength, and make new friends.

Drink lots of water, stretch a little before bed, and get excited to return. You’re officially a dancer now!

Starting dance is a big step (literally!). You’re joining a community of artists, athletes, and friends who will cheer you on every step of the way. At Nan’s School of Dance, we believe in helping each student shine at their own pace with joy, confidence, and lots of movement.

So take a deep breath, lace up those shoes, and step into class with your head held high. Your dance adventure is just beginning. We can’t wait to see where it takes you!
