Top 5 Benefits Of Taking Dance Lessons For Your Child

Top 5 Benefits Of Taking Dance Lessons For Your Child

Dancing teaches positive things that will serve children well throughout their lives.

Learning to dance offers many valuable life lessons. Dance helps young children develop cognitively, socially, and emotionally. The discipline and focus children learn and practice at Nan’s Dance are important life skills that will transfer over to school and all other aspects of their lives.

The goal for our students at Nan’s Dance is to encourage technical proficiency in their favorite form of dance, but most importantly, to build self-discipline, poise, and greater self-esteem. We also make it fun!

Here are the top 5 ways your child will benefit from taking dance:

#1 – Improves Confidence & Self-Esteem

Learning to dance is a huge confidence booster. When our students master a new dance or technique really well, it raises their self-esteem exponentially. Dancing can be challenging, so if your child becomes proficient at dancing, they will be able to handle other life challenges with confidence.
During lessons, your child will also discover how their body moves and become more graceful. It takes positive self-image and great confidence to dance on stage in front of an audience, and dance helps encourage both of these valuable qualities. We have been so amazed at the improved confidence of our students year after year at Nan’s Dance.

#2 – Improves Physical Health & Posture

It’s increasingly important for children to have a physically active lifestyle. Dancing is not only a great workout, it’s a fun source of exercise! Learning a love of dance from an early age can help motivate kids to stay active as they grow. Dance utilizes the entire body and all of its muscle groups. Our classes can increase your child’s flexibility, range of motion, stamina, and physical strength.

As well as promoting overall health, dance techniques can help children with sports and other activities at school and beyond. Regular dance practice can also correct poor posture, increase balance and improve overall coordination.

#3 – Builds Relationships & Improves Social Skills

Dance lessons are a great place for kids to make new friends. With each class, children learn to improve their communication and social skills by interacting with other dancers in their class. They also learn how to work together as a team. Whether they are dancing with just one partner or with the whole group for a recital, your child will learn teamwork in our dance studio.

In addition to helping children communicate better, dance can help them develop a greater sense of trust and cooperation. The classes are also a great way to help shy kids break out of their shell!

#4 – Develops Perseverance & Self-Discipline

Perseverance is a very important life skill. At Nan’s Dance, children learn to try again when they don’t succeed the first time doing a new dance or new position. Being able to make mistakes, ask for help, accept constructive feedback and make improvements are all great skills to have. When they finally master a complicated movement, they’ll have a sense of accomplishment that will encourage them to conquer other challenges throughout their lives.

Learning a new dance routine and persevering until you get everything right, really teaches self-discipline. Dance requires discipline and focus, which translates to improved listening skills and academic performance. In addition, dance lessons can help reinforce educational basics, like counting.

#5 – Increases Creativity & Improves Mood

Honing a child’s creativity at a young age will help them later in life. Children who take dance lessons at an early age can find a constructive outlet for their creativity and a positive way to express themselves. Young dancers gain an appreciation for the arts by being exposed to a wide range of music and a variety of different dance styles. Our classes offer a safe outlet for imagination and emotion.

Dance can also help foster a positive attitude. Just the act of dancing has been shown to make a person feel physically refreshed and improve their mood. Group dancing can be a tool to release daily stress and be a constructive distraction from everyday worries. Dance awakens new perceptions in children which helps them learn and think in new ways. It offers them the opportunity to make creative decisions, even at a young age.

Perhaps an even greater benefit not on this list? Having fun. Dancing is fun! We’ve been sharing the love of dance with our students since 1975. Nan’s School of Dance is a place for your dancer to grow and establish self-discipline and self-confidence while also having fun!
