# 5 Reasons Why You Should Send Your Child To Dance Camp

Summer break is long, and plenty of kids are looking for something to do by the end of the first week. Dance camp is a great answer. Your child gets to try different dance styles, move every day, and build some confidence along the way. Here are five reasons to send your child to dance camp this summer.

## Develops physical fitness

Camp keeps kids moving. They spend the day learning and practicing different styles, so they’re getting exercise without it feeling like exercise. Along the way they work on balance, coordination, flexibility and endurance. Your child stays active, picks up new skills, and has fun doing it.

## Enhances creativity

Dance gives kids somewhere to put their imagination. At camp they try out different styles and techniques, and they get to make up routines of their own. Expressing themselves that way builds creativity, and it does a lot for their self-esteem and confidence too.

## Improves social skills

Camp is a group activity, so your child spends the day working with other kids. They practice talking things through and cooperating as a team. They also learn how to give feedback and how to take it, which helps them get along with others and make friends.

## Builds self-confidence

Dancing in front of other people asks kids to step outside their comfort zone. Every time they learn a routine and get it right, they trust their own abilities a little more. Performing for an audience adds to that, and it makes them braver about taking risks and trying new things.

## Provides a fun and engaging summer activity

Camp gives your child something to look forward to. They learn new skills and make new friends in a supportive, positive place. It’s also structured and supervised, which helps a lot once the summer days start to feel very long (for them and for you). ## What summer dance classes add

Camp isn’t the only way to dance over the break. Summer classes give your dancer a lot of the same benefits, and they’re a good way to keep training or to try dance for the first time. It’s never too late to start!

### Less screen time, more moving

Long summer days make it easy for kids to sink into screens. A little TV or a few video games is fine, but too much means a lot of sitting, and that isn’t great for growing kids. Dance classes give them a structured way to stay active. Regular classes help with flexibility, coordination, balance and strength. Classes are indoors, too, so your child can burn off energy out of the summer heat. (If they do want some screen time, these [dance apps for kids](https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/the-best-dance-apps-for-kids/) at least get them on their feet.)

### Progress you can see

There’s nothing quite like watching your child get better at something they love. In dance you can see it happen: new steps, cleaner technique, and more confidence and pride in what they can do. Our summer program is open to beginners and advanced dancers alike, so each child can progress at their own pace.

### Learning that feels like play

Dance works the brain as well as the body. Kids build spatial awareness, pick up on patterns, and train their memory every time they remember the steps of a routine. Those skills come in handy at school too. Kids see dance class as play, so they stay mentally sharp over the break without it feeling like summer school.

## When should you start looking for a summer dance camp?

As early as you can. Popular summer dance camps fill up quickly, so start looking at least several months before summer begins, especially if your child already has a particular camp in mind.

### What to look for in a dance camp

A few things to think about as you compare camps:

- Location. How far from home are you willing to drive each day?
- Style of dance. Camps focus on different styles, from ballet to hip hop. Pick one that teaches what your child is most excited about.
- Instructors. Who teaches the classes? What experience do they have in that style, and how do they like to teach?
- Schedule and length. How long does camp last, and does it fit your summer plans and your budget? Is there more than one session to choose from?
- Age and level. Some camps are for beginners and some are for more advanced dancers. Look for one that matches your child’s age and skill level.

Once you have a short list, do a little homework. Read reviews from families who have been, look at each camp’s website and social media, and ask the organizers any questions you still have. And on a rainy summer afternoon, a pick from our [dance movies for the whole family](https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/dance-friendly-movies-for-the-whole-family/) is a fun way to get your dancer excited for camp.
